So, at that SF con that I mentioned in January, Arisia, here in Cambridge, MA, has a Heinlein Society Blood Drive every year. To encourage people to sign up, they have a coterie of volunteers called the Naughty Nurses; who go completely over the top with the naughty part.

(a tame pic here).

many of the women who do it are 'normal' or size 14-18 inbetweenies; last night, the woman who organizes it suddenly came up to me and asked me if I'd like to be a naughty nurse. I am a size 28 death fat, so I'm not the Normal Naughty Nurse, shall we say.

Problem is, I've already spent my costume money for Arisia on a purple and black corset and a Friday I'm In Love t-shirt from Threadless. Soooo...I need suggestions from the studio audience on how I could do this (I told her if I could come up with a costume by the new year, I'd do it.

I am thinking of scouring Goodwill for scrubs, then turning them into hot pant chaps by the simple expedient of slicing open the outside seams, and putting rivets down the sides to then lace with shoelaces, corset-like. Anyone ever done this?

I would like to maybe find a red or white corset but money is really tight and so I suspect that's not going to happen (but if anyone is going to sell one in the next while that would fit a 28 with DDD-cups, do think of me).

I've also been looking for white pumps online (preferably a wedge) to go with the shoes. I wear a 10WW or 11W depending. But you know, white shoes after labour day and all...I know they're out there but I'm looking in the wrong places.

I would *really* like to do this and go out there being sexy as hell even at my size, but this is the sort of costume that thin girls can get off the rack for cheap and larger people need to spend more time on, and I've only got 3 weeks. If anyone has *any* ideas on what a death fat can do to totally rock the naughty nurse look on a shoestring budget, I really need an assist!

NOLOSE is your community.

"Both times I've come to NOLOSE in 2006 and 2008, it was with the support of scholarships. As a student and working artist, I wouldn't have been able to afford the costs of full participation, but without NOLOSE, I would literally be lost throughout the year else. There's no other event in the country where I'm so heartily embraced for my fierce, fat, queer, femme colored self, and that means so much to me!" said Naima Lowe, an exceptionally talented fat queer femme of color activist, filmmaker, NOLOSE conference attendee, and scholarship recipient.

Every year, 100% of NOLOSE's scholarship funding comes from you. Community-led fundraisers like the Fat Girl Flea help us bring many activists from all over the world to the nation's only conference dedicated to building a space for fat, queer, and trans folks to analyze, mobilize, organize, and celebrate. As an organization, NOLOSE is dedicated to building a movement, a voice, and a vibrant community of fierce fat folks and allies.

Scholarships are an integral part of ensuring that the most under-resourced in our community can take part in this beautiful, life-changing space.

This year, the NOLOSE board is committed to holding an even bigger (pun intended!) and more successful conference by providing an increased amount of financial aid to our attendees. We may be small in numbers, but you, the community, have shown again and again just how dedicated you are. We believe in you and we want to give you this opportunity to continue in your partnership with NOLOSE and the fat queer & trans movement.

"As a super-sized, dis/abled person I deeply appreciated NOLOSE recognizing that I may be in a position to need extra financial help attending the conference. NOLOSE truly valued my presence as well as the contributions of other disproportionately affected peoples, and was willing to work to get us there," said another NOLOSE scholarship recipient.

Our scholarships prioritize funding for people who have historically been the most under-represented at NOLOSE and in the movement: people with financial need, trans and gender non-conforming folks, people with disabilities, people of color, people over 50, super fatties, and starting this year, international attendees. NOLOSE's dedication to diversity isn't just lip service; we walk the talk and believe that our movements can only succeed when they are led by those most affected by social injustices.

We ask you to help support your friends and peers by giving to the NOLOSE Scholarship Fund. 100% of your gift will go towards the Scholarship Fund, which will resource even more brilliant gorgeous activists' attendance at the next conference, which promises to be the best one yet!

Even if $5 or $10 is all you can give, we urge you to consider making a tax-deductible contribution via our Facebook Cause page or our Network for Good page. And, $10 a month can turn into $120 via monthly giving, which is a great way to stretch your dollar and show your continued support.

But whether or not you give (although we hope you will!), we on the NOLOSE board wanted to also take this opportunity to give thanks to all of you who make up the hearts, souls, brains, and bodies of the movement. We love you, and we can't wait to see you on the West Coast at the next conference!

Big fat love,
Cristy, Devra, Amanda, Geleni, Jen, Joe, Kim, Tara, Sondra, and Zoe

Has anyone seen Power Squids in Toronto?

I don't mind paying a little more than the listed $20-25 CAD: by my arithmetic I'd be paying over $80 after factoring in shipping, customs duties, brokerage fees and so on if I order it online.

Well, it's Xmess and I arrived safely, albeit tired, in New Jerseyland where they had 24" of snow dumped here last week. It's just me and my folks. My brother Dave popped in last night to say hello. The cocktails have been in ample supply (pumpkin spice soy with rum is a great egg nog substitute for a vegan!) as has the toasty warm fireplace. My sister, brother-in-law and nephew will be here tomorrow.

It's good to just relax. I miss my kittens, although Todd posted a picture of them eating, so I know they're fine and still super adorable.

I'll head in to the city on Sunday, have lunch with my mentor, meet up with Sonia, and go run around. If you're around and want to hang out, give me a shout.

There's just one thing missing.

Hello, and happy holidays! I received the above coat in Seal (grey) in 1X however it is too small and the website is sold out of any other size. I can't find it on ebay either. I am IN LOVE with this coat and am hoping someone else here bought/received the wrong size and is willing to swap or would be willing to give theirs up. I would pay up to $80 for it, and need a 2X. Thanks so much!

Hello everyone! I would like to know if there is an existing community/group for Toronto fats that do clothing swaps? Or group shopping trips?

I love the idea of doing one but have never encountered one in the GTA…

If there is no existing group, would anyone be interested in participating in one? I would want to gauge interest before trying to organize something.

Please comment below or feel free to email me with questions or comments. Thanks!

Mods – I checked the memories but did not find anything addressing this. I hope this post is ok!

If you are in or coming through the PDX area, may I highly, highly recommend savvyplus.com? I found it while on vacation just because I was wandering Hawthorne, and walked out with some lovely clothes at rock-bottom prices. I mean, a cosplay ballgown for $30? A beautiful handmade hapi coat that still had the original tags for $152 that I got for $45? $8 Venezia jeans, a velvet cardigan for less than $20? It'll *so* be worth paying for the extra suitcase on the plane. :)
They do buy clothes if it's good quality stuff - there was no WalMart anything in there. I think Lane Bryant would be the lowest common demoninator. Give the owner a call if you want to talk about shipping your clothes for sale. She's very friendly!
